June 2003
On Thursday, June 12, 2003, Cascade Lodge # 5 carried on some old traditions of the Lodge by meeting at one of the many interesting sites in Banff National Park. Fourteen members of the Lodge and one visitor gathered at the Cave and Basin National Historic Site.
In1883 Railway workers William McCardell, Thomas McCardell and Frank McCabe discovered hot springs (known today as the Cave and Basin), at the foot of Sulphur Mountain. When William McCardell discovered the amazing cave tucked away in the mountains, he described it as " ... some fantastic dream from a tale of the Arabian Nights." This discovery, led to the creation of Canada's National Parks system in 1885.
It had been alleged that William McCardell and Frank McCabe were Masons when they discovered the Cave and Basin. During the meeting of June 12, the members learned a great deal about the origins of the cave, its discovery and some insights into the three main players. There is no doubt that McCardell and McCabe were members of Cascade Lodge, but not in 1883. They were initiated much later. V.W. Bro. Les Punshon provided us with interesting information that he had found during research into the origins of the cave and its discoverers. Needless to say, there was much controversy during the time and varying accounts of whom did what to whom are evident.
A most enjoyable evening by Cascade Lodge # 5 by opening at the Cave and Basin and later, during refreshment, discussing what went on those many years ago.
